How do I change an Interchangeable Core?

After all rekeys have been used, it is time to install new Small Format Interchangeable Cores (SFIC) for another set of rekeys.

A set of replacement SFIC cores is sent after the last rekey in the previous set of SFIC cores has been performed. The authorized personnel responsible for the affected location/locks uses the following process to change out the SFIC cores:

  1. Locate the Control Key that is stamped with "CTRL" or "C-".
    • Insert the Control Key into the core and turn it about 15 degrees clockwise (to the right). In that position, the locking lug is depressed into the SFIC core and it can be pulled out of the housing.
    • Holding the core in your hand, turn the Control Key back 15 degrees (counter-clockwise) to remove the Control Key from the core.
  2. The new Control Key that came with the fresh set of cores will be used to install the new cores.
    • Holding the new core in your hand, insert the Control Key and turn the key 15 degrees clockwise (to the right).
    • Insert the new core into the lock and turn the Control Key counter-clockwise (to the left) to lock the core in place.
    • Remove the Control Key and the Core remains in the lock.
  3. Once installation of the cores has been completed, issue the new keys to key holders.

  4. Your new cores are now reset to Step 1. Place the next step (Step 2) rekeying kit that arrived with these cores in the secure location where all rekeying kits for the location are kept.
