After all rekeys have been used, it is time to install new Small Format Interchangeable Cores (SFIC) for another set of rekeys. Here's how to do that.
A set of replacement SFIC cores is sent after the last rekey in the previous set of SFIC cores has been performed. The authorized personnel responsible for the affected location/locks uses the following process to change out the SFIC cores:
- Locate the Control Key that is stamped with "CTRL" or "C-". Insert this key in an SFIC core and turn it about 15 degrees clockwise (to the right). In that position, the locking lug is depressed into the SFIC core and it can be pulled out of the housing. Holding the SFIC core in your hand, turn the Control Key back 15 degrees (counter-clockwise) to remove the Control Key from the SFIC core.
- A new Control Key that came with the new set is used to install the new SFIC cores. Holding the new SFIC core in your hand, insert the Control Key and turn the key 15 degrees clockwise (to the right). Insert the new SFIC core into the lock and turn the Control Key counter-clockwise (to the left) to lock the SFIC core in place. Remove the Control Key and the SFIC Core remains in the lock.
- Once installation of the SFIC cores has been completed, issue the new keys to key holders.
- Your available rekeys are now reset to Step 1. Place the next step (Step 2) Rekeying Kit that arrived with the new set and Operating Keys in the secure location where all Rekeying Kits for the location are kept.
- Ship the old SFIC cores back to InstaKey for a potential product credit against the purchase of the new SFIC cores.
