Here's how to rekey an InstaKey user-rekeyable Small Format Interchangeable Core (SFIC) cylinder
Important: Do not rekey unless a key has been lost, stolen or unaccounted for. If you get a key back from a terminated employee, simply reassign it to a new key holder and avoid the rekey and spending on materials.
To conduct a rekey, you will need:
- The Step Change Key (marked with a red dot sticker)
- An existing operating key
- A new operating key
- Locate the Rekeying Kit.
Inside the rekeying kit you will find:- a trifold card which indicates the step you'll be changing to along with a list of doors that will need to be rekeyed.
- Inside of the trifold card, there is a list of step by step instructions for rekeying, the next set of operating keys and a Step Change Key (the one with the red dot).
- We recommend assigning new operating keys to key holders before conducting the rekey process, but you may also do this after, if you prefer.
- Insert the Step Change Key into the lock and turn it clockwise 180 degrees or down to the 6 o'clock position. Then turn it back 180 degrees or back to the 12 o'clock position.
- Pull the Step Change Key out of the lock with one hand cupped under the lock. You'll notice a small metal circle fall out into your cupped hand. This completes the step change process.
- Try an old operating key to ensure it no longer operates the lock.
After rekeying, don't forget to order your next rekeying kit to have on hand the next time a rekey is needed.
