Troubleshooting tips for when a rekey is not successful in deactivating old keys
If your old keys continue to operate after attempting to rekey a lock, the rekey process was unsuccessful. Several factors may contribute to this issue:
- You may not have achieved the necessary 180-degree (half way around) key turn with the step change key.
- In this scenario, it is essential to Rekey with a Control Key
- If you noticed a small metal pin fall out but the old keys continue to work, you may need to complete the rekey process again.
- If a previous attempt to rekey was not completed correctly, it may be necessary to remove multiple pins to ensure that your old keys no longer work. The rekeying process will stop once you've reached the matching supplied step level.
- Keep turning until no additional pins come out of the lock
Ensure you are using the proper Rekeying Kit - Rekeying Kits are key level based and will not rekey differing levels.
A Master Rekeying Kit will not deactivate keys on the User Level and vice versa.
